MORLEY CALVERT
Born in Brantford, Ont, in 1928, Calvert studied music at McGill University.
He taught music in Montreal high schools (1950-72), directed the Imperial
Singers (1954-6), and the Montreal Citadel Band of the Salvation Army
(1960-70). Calvert founded and directed (1960-70) the McGill University
Concert Band, as well as directed the Lakeshore Concert Band (1967-72).
He founded the Monteregian Music Camp at Ayers Cliff, Que, in 1958. In
1972, he became the conductor of the Barrie Central Collegiate Band.
He remained in that position until his retirement in 1985.
Throughout his career in music, Calvert
composed many works, including Suite from the Monteregian Hills (1961),
An Occasional Suite (1967), and Romantic Variations (1976). Calvert was
invited to membership in the American Bandmasters'Association, becoming
the only Canadian school band director and one of only six Canadian
musicians to hold membership in this organization. Calvert is listed
in The International Who's Who in Music, The Dictionary of International
Biography, and the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada.
Calvert's musicality and dedication
to excellence influenced hundreds of Central musicians. Members of the
band were fortunate indeed to have worked with such an outstanding musician.
They developed pride in themselves, their school and their community.
A commitment to the band resulted in values and friendships for a lifetime.
Morely, as he was affectionately known
by his students (when out of ear shot) unexpectedly passed away in 1991.
